Fast moving screens, New gadget launches, media space filled with attractions for kids, overflowing toy store shelves, a plethora of book and activity stores, fashion parades for kids, virtual reality & artificial intelligence… This is the space our kids are living in today.
While many may argue that it is fortunate to have all these trying hard to grasp a mindshare of our kids today; it does come with its own array of new age issues and challenges for us parents to handle. Disinterested, Entitled and unhappy generation of kids is here to be managed, coached and redirected to living a Life. It is time to take back the control of our kids’ lives from marketers hands and deliver them securely back to our kids. It is time to get them back to being happy and healthy kids.
The current generation of kids often seems alienated from their parents, siblings, family members, teachers and even other students in schools and colleges. Gone are the days when children were mostly found smiling in glee at innocent little discoveries. Today’s kids, for whatever reason, seem to get irritated at small little things, show no interest in being friendly with their family members and often appear upset or bored with things happening around. Child psychologists and occupational therapists who deal with children of all ages have noticed this behavioral pattern in most of the kids today and believe that things can get worse if not tackled now. Bored, entitled, unhappy, impatient, friendless kids not only have behavioral, social and emotional issues, but they are also poor learners and their academic performance too is affected badly.
Why is this generation of kids so restless and disinterested in engaging in positive communication, interaction and relationships? Few of the top reasons have been listed here:-
1. We have pampered our kids to the hilt. In the process have spoilt them in the worst possible manner. Kids today are so used to getting what they want they do not know how to handle situations and people when their demands are not met. Researchers believe that this logic of instant gratification, though done with the best intentions by parents, is one of the main culprits in impairing the child from responding under stressful situations.
WHat should you do: Saying ‘No’ and meaning it is the best way to delay this gratification and helping the child learn to encounter obstacles. There needs to be a gap between their wanting something and giving in to the demand by parents and elders.

What should you do: Limiting screening time and exposure to technology is what parents need to do on an immediate basis. Disciplining the child is a great tool that works wonders in such a situation. Also spending quality time with your kids – whether playing indoor and outdoor games with them, going out for dinners, going out on regular vacations, singing and dancing together and other such activities are recommended.
3. Parents work hard to create artificial fun environment for their kids. In such a space everything is fast-paced, there are no dull moments, and there is entertainment all around. This is the reason why their brain doesn’t want to get involved in daily routine activities because it appears monotonous to the brain.
